Other Info: Colour, Closed-Captioned This spellbinding Canadian film
by Thom Fitzgerald ably mixes a captivating sense of magical realism with the often hard,
troubling reality of its characters. Sweet William hasn't been home in 10 years and he's
changed so much that his family, at first, doesn't recognize him. When he tries on the
tuxedo his mother rented for him for his sister's wedding, it no longer fits. But then,
Sweet William is thin now. Not like when used to weigh 300 pounds, which is just one of
reasons he hasn't been home in a decade. His emotionally crippling father poured all of
his efforts into his garden and named his kids after flowers, perhaps in some half-hearted
attempt to get as close to them as he is to his plants. William is openly gay now, and his
sister is marrying the first man he had a sexual experience with. The Hanging Garden
is a movie with powerful themes and striking imagery, particularly that of a teenaged
William's hanged ghost appearing in the waking world, but it also has a lighter, giddily
humorous side. If you're looking for a Canadian film that packs a powerful emotional
wallop, features great performances and beautiful cinematography, then you'll want to
check out this movie.
From Leonard
Maltin's Movie & Video Guide
Hanging Garden, The: Strikingly original, multi-layered psychological drama
about Sweet William, the product of a dysfunctional family, who returns home after a
ten-year absence to attend his sister's wedding. The film moves in and out of reality, and
between present and past; a telling exploration of the complexities and emotional truths
of family relationships.

Video Label:
Length: 114 minutes
Format: VHS - NTSC (Canada and US Only)
Rating: RThis darkly witty and disturbing film is an exploration of
the life of a coal-miners family in 1940s Nova Scotia. Margaret (Helen
Bonham-Carter) is a feisty, strong-willed young woman constantly assaulted by the harsh
lifestyle of the mining town. Her embittered mother (Kate Nelligan) has buried a husband
and a son and Margaret herself finds the prospect of romance irksome. But she falls in
love with a free-spirited fellow (Clive Russell) who shuns the thought of labouring his
life away in the mines. Financial hardships force him to reconsider and he takes his life
in his hands to put food on the table. Margarets Museum is a multiple
Genie award-winning film featuring superb performances. |

A Sigh and a Wish tells the story of pioneer folklorist Helen
Creighton and of the enduring appeal of her remarkable collections of song
and story. Creighton helped define Maritime culture as we know it. Thanks to
her, folk songs moved out of the kitchens and the fishing boats into the
mainstream. Top contemporary Maritime musicians--talents like Raylene
Rankin, Mary Jane Lamond and Lennie Gallant--describe how deeply they
have been influenced by Creighton.
For 60 years, Creighton sought out ghost stories, superstitions and tales of
buried treasure, as well as timeless songs handed down from generation to
generation: fishing songs, work songs, love songs. "Farewell to Nova
Scotia," which closed out CBC-TV's Sing Along Jubilee, is
perhaps the most famous.
A Sigh and a Wish is a moving tribute to the genius of a self-taught
folklorist and to the continuing strength of the deep oral traditions she
helped preserve. But it also raises important questions. Does Creighton's
collection truly reflect Maritime culture, or is it tinged by her own
upper-middle-class assumptions?
