Like any painter worth his salt, Jimmy Rankin knows how to make a
lasting impression. Except that, as a man who has won four SOCAN-sponsored
ECMA-and-Juno Songwriter Of The Year Awards for the chart-topping "Fare
Thee Well Love," "You Feel The Same Way Too," "Followed Her Around" and
"Midnight Angel," his canvas isn't restricted to an easel and a few
tubes of paint.
It's framed by experience -- and depending on how the Cape Breton native
channels his idea -- a masterstroke of an alt. country,
adult-contemporary or rock-flavored arrangement depicting his life,
emotions and observations with resonating finesse.
Just hand him a guitar -- preferably an acoustic Gibson; give him a
little think-time and watch Jimmy -- no, hear him -- weave some aural
magic.
"To me, writing a song is almost like creating a painting," notes Jimmy,
who offers 13 picture-perfect portraits of sonic splendor on his new
album Edge Of Day.
Jimmy Rankin thanks:
Mia and James Beckett Rankin, the Rankin and Nishi families, Colin Linden, John
Whynot, Graeme McDonald, Byron Wong, Heather Frantsi, Richard Mills and SL Feldman, Dale Speaking, Sam Pickard and Holly Cybulski at Strut Publicity, FACTOR, The Radio Starmaker Fund, Music Nova Scotia, EMI Music Canada, Jonathan
Gallivan, Benny Fong, Amanda VanDenBrock, Cookie Rankin, Tina Simpkin and Jamie Robinson at Gibson, Chip Sutherland, Robert Frank, June Leaf and my band and crew.
Colin Linden thanks:
Janice Powers, John Whynot, Colin James, Brain Harrison, Chad Hailey, Wayne Jackson and Tom Wilson.
This
collaboration of friends and colleagues resulted from one invitation to
perform, many phone calls, uncounted e-mails and approximately a day and
a half of rehearsal. We hope the collective respect and fondness
these artists have for one another, and the ease with which they share
the stage is conveyed in this live recording.

THESE ARE THE MOMENTS – 2009:
With the musical footprints of “Rise Again” and “Fare Thee Well
Love” anchoring the spirit of the CD, the family added industry
veteran Frank Davies as the Executive Producer and Juno award-winning
producer Steven MacKinnon behind the console. Together they selected
and recorded all the new material (four of which were written or
co-written by Jimmy and Heather) then created reworked and remixed
versions of two of their biggest hits from the past with noted
producer Jeff Dawson augmented the previously existing tracks chosen
for the album while renowned mixer Mike Fraser (Norah Jones, AC-DC)
who added his magic to them, along with the lead-off single “Breathe
(Dream Pray Love)”. Rounding out the album are several other
timeless Rankin classics featured in their CTV Reunion special, most
of which were also written or co-written by the family.
The end result is a new, fresh, uplifting and inspiring collection
of songs. Lyrically and musically it stands as a brilliant body of
work that quite coincidentally reflects the hope that is so
desperately sought in these uncertain times. The first single,
“Breathe Dream Pray Love”, serves to introduce a lush,
contemporary variation to their familiar sound and harmonies; there is
“Hopeville” with its poignant and relevant lyrics, the wistful,
but edgy “Straight Into Love” and the moving “Never Alone”.
“My Only Wish” a song for us all and the personal ode to love,
“I Would” round out the new selections. The four Rankins trade
lead vocals on the CD, adding their signature harmonies throughout.
These are the Moments is set for release on Longview/MapleMusic
Recordings on February 3rd along with a national tour that begins on
the west coast the next day.
