I sing in a SATB choir and at our most recent concert we sang the beautiful song Fare Thee Well by Jimmy Rankin , arranged for 4 part harmony by Stuart Calvert. I love this song and would really like to know more of the story or meaning behind it. It has such a haunting melody. I would also like to have an arrangement for guitar with the chords if it is possible.Where can I get this? Isobel Emmerson isobelemmerson@aol.com I am a member of the 2nd Battalion The Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton). I love your music, I have all your CD's. I was at John Morris's funeral as a representative of the 2nd Battalion. Lieutanant Steve MacDonald OCdt.MacDonald_RCA@pipingunlimited.com I saw you in concert 2 years ago at the Merlefest and I was blown away. You are just great and so talented. I want you to know you have changed my preferance in music. I only wish I could of heard you when you first started recording I would'nt of wasted all that time hearing the same boring music. HAPPY BIRTHDAY COOKIE! Robin Sartain Resartain@cs.com Thank you for the beautiful music you make! Sara doghouse1@sympatico.ca I first heard your music on a country western station doing movin on. It was fantastic. I then went to a dear friends funeral and listened to "We Rise Again" during the moving service. What a range. We went back home and listened to the rest of your CD. You are truly a wonderfully talented group and I hope you continue surprising us with this wonderful mix of music. marian giddyup1@prodigy.net I love the sound of beautiful voices singing great songs, and you've always fit the bill. Hope all is going well for you and I am looking forward to hearing more beautiful music from you soon. Hope all is going well for you on your new venture. Haven't heard much about how it is going for you. If its been a ruff go don't worry with a voice like yours you'll be back on top soon. I am sure. Have a great birthday full of hope and joy. Cass CassMP@aol.com I first heard of the Rankins last year while driving through the Scottish Borders. Parlour Medley was on the radio and as soon as I got home I went out and bought Uprooted. I was saddened to hear that I had arrived too late to hear the band play live and of the death of John Morris (he died on my mother's birthday and she died just a few days after him). I take their music with me on my travels, specially to Scotland. Infact only last week I was discussing the band with a gentleman in Drumnadrochit by Loch Ness who was also unaware the band had split up. Perhaps the remaining members may reform one day and visit the British Isles again. I'll be watching out. John Lees john.lees@onmail.co.uk Hello Rankins! Just wanted to sign your guestbook and wish all of you a warm hello and hope that you are all in good health and spirits. I think of you all th time and keep you in my prayers. Raylene, you are strong and I hope everything works out for you. As tough as it must be, try to keep some faith for yourself and pray that all will be well. I grew up beside the Rankins and practically bacame a household ornament until they decided they had enough of me and moved up the street. I will always keep them close to my heart, as I hope every fan of theirs does for them. Continue striving! Lori (Pat) Mac Donald lori mac donald lorinova32578256 I was lucky enough to see you guys perform twice in Oshawa, Ont. You guys are the best band in Canada. zhollyz@hotmail.com I'm in grade four. Heather Mac Quarrie hmacquar@hha.ab.ca In 2000 a poem (Special Places) was submitted to the Rankin Family to review derekbre@telusplanet.net I didn't become familiar with the Rankin Family music until after the band had broken up. I grieved along with you at the death of John Morris...what a tremendous loss! I play the CDs I have a lot, and keep hoping that one day there might be a reunion, but I understand about burnout. I'm really looking forward to Jimmy's new CD coming out. What an awesome contribution to the music world you have been! Anne Clark dognclog@ewa.net When can we get concert here in the middle North American continent? Say, in the Dallas, Texas, area!!!!! Darrel VanDyke darrel.vandyke@compaq.com A few years ago, I had heard of the Rankins, but not yet heard your music. Then, I was searching for a couple of very beautiful songs I had heard several times each on the local radio station, and found they were both yours (Fare Thee Well Love and Rise Again.) Kim
Hey there,I am one of ur biggest fans ever i swear :) Crystal Ludlow c_ludlow6@hotmail.com Thanks Kimberly for the info on the songbook. It will be paull Well, Honestly I haven't listened to anything by the Rankins, but I did think it was pretty funny when Jimmy Rankin came into my work place, and was signing for a purchase, because the girl I work with is from Cape Breton and knew who he was, never said a thing and made me totally uncomfortable searching over my shoulder for something (at that point i had no idea what) She told me later that it was definitely Jimmy Rankin of The Rankin Family (she was searching for his signiture.) I figured I'd come on and check out what he looks like and such things...I think I'll even give them a try! Cherie Underhill tigers@tropicalstorm.com When visiting Nova Scotia we came across "The Sounds of Nova Scotia". We bought it, and loved every song on it - especially the song by The Rankins. When we returned home, we bought "Sounds - II". Since then we have purchased other Canadian CD's but we just ordered "The Collection" and are looking forward to getting it. Cuilins@aol.com Scotland - Saturday, March, 03, 2001 at 15:50:44 (PDT) Would like snail mail or email address. Paul Jette jette@ieee.com I still lived in Canada when John Morris was killed in that auto accident. It's just a shame that the family cannot carry on as a group without him. I bet it's not something he would of wanted if it had been another family member. I miss hearing their music on the radio since I left Canada. Anne angilca@yahoo.com I am a relatively new listener to the Rankin's music (favorite song - You Feel The Same Way Too). Although the band has separated, I feel that each performer will still portray some part of the 'Rankins' in their solo careers. The band was definitely one of the best in eastern canada. Good luck to all! Newton Pritchett countrygarden@usa.net Our daughters dance school, The Hawley School of Highland Dance, is travelling this July to Nova Scotia, for the New Glascow Games, Highland dance Competition, and also Fredericton, New Brunswick Games, the week in between the games we are staying in Antigonish and looking forward to travelling to all the sites, including Mabou. We love the Rankins music. We saw them live a couple of years ago at the Tecumseh Cornfest show near Windsor Ontario. And my husband saw them live at the New Hampshire Highland Games, in Loon Mountain New Hampshire in 1991. Looking forward to our NS tour. Jody Tweney ttweney@home.com You are part of the future history of Canada, your music is an uplift to life in itself. It's lovely to listen to, but I think I Mick USA - Sunday, February 04, 2001 at 10:36:24 (PDT) Thanks for the Mull River Shuffle. We always go to the High School dances and the place always goes nuts for this song. Also late nights in the downtown clubs, the Rankins come on and the roof nearly falls in and everyone gets into it, including the ones who don't even know about the Rankins. They always end up asking "Who was that?" or better yet "What was that?". I always think , they are from the Cape, just like me , and I love music, especially great music. Thanks. Michael Thebault thebolt19@hotmail Thank-you.Thank-you for all the years of sharing your music, culture and yourselves! Pete Fyfe petefyfe@aol.com Please can I add to the sentiments of Bill Allin. Pete Fyfe petefyfe@aol.com God did not put so much talent into one family to have the Rankins fall silent or sing separately. At least you could record together and perform occasionally. Be the kind of people that mama Kaye would want you to be. Bill Allin billallin@hotmail.com Well hello, I'm not much of a writer, but I thought after delaying it for 6 years. It's was time to say thank-you. I suppose, I should explain. I was in Croatia in 1993 in Charlie Coy when its wasn't a nice place to be, and just before heading over we were short cooks. So young Mil men was sent with us Dougie Butts from where else Cape Breten. He brought with him his stereo and a couple of CD's, one of those where Fare Thee Well Love. Well I must admit at that time I never really knew any of your music. Dougie changed that your CD was played every night very low lights out and if listened in the distance fire burst of a conflict or another, Dougie called it his soul music. Well I guess I've adopted that, your music made an unbearable place bearable. Still to this day I listen to your music and occasionally lights low and I'm there all over again remembering how this album put us at ease. I suppose, I should write Dougie sometime and thank him also.. Sorry for the grammar/spelling. TAKE CARE have a wonderful Christmas and again THANK-YOU Eugene , ON Canada - Sunday, December 17, 2000 at 19:56:34 (PDT) we are not ur ordinary Rankin file fans! Your music is the James Gow
Your music is so uplifting, it's wonderful. As a proud Michelle Erving islandbeaches20@sympatico.ca Sorry for my non-Oxford English but believe or not me and my Jaroslav Popelka popelka@chemopetrol.cz Wonderful Web site Ed Tell <etell66377@aol.com> Toronto, Ont Canada - Tuesday, December 05, 2000 at 17:53:17 (PST) Today I finally discovered your wonderful website, after searching many places for any information I could find about The Rankins Family this past year. Celtic music is one of my favorites, but after listening to many song clips this afternoon, I agree that your's really is "Rankin". I first heard you on the Chieftans' CDs, Fire in the Kitchen and Tears of Stone. The latter's, "Jimmy", I think is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard! So very sorry to read about the loss of John Morris last January, and of your plans to go seperate creative ways. You truly are a most talented family. I wish you all the best, and will plan to track down as many of your CDs as I can now that I have finally found the source. Thank you for making and sharing such beautiful music with us all, even though it took so long for some of us to discover you. Charlie Page Charlie Page <charlesmpagesr@hotmail.com> Missoula, MT USA - Tuesday, December 05, 2000 at 14:41:18 (PST) To The Rankins: I pray that you will all "Rise Again" just as John has. He would want you to carry on, I know it. The music you choose to sing turns most of us listeners to putty, and I realize you can never replace John, but if you were to stop it would be a sad thing and i dont believe he would want that. I play a bit of piano (good old upright as ssen in your vid) and when i do "fare thee well love" i think of all of you lined up in that video doing one of the most haunting (beautiful) songs I have ever heard. You are always welcome here at my place - either in CD form, or even in person (HEHE - not that that would happen). Please keep playing and singing, and may God bless each one of you and help take the pain of the loss of John, and instill the finest memory possible ... a big smile on his face in your mind and heart. Love to you all ... even though we have never met in person, your music and I are old freinds. - Ron Gunther, Vancouver Canada. Ron Gunther <rag@telus.net> Vancouver, bc Canada - Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at 10:59:49 (PST) I'm a new fan of The Rankin Family. I first heard their music in my friend's car a month ago. I was totally absorbed by it. Just bought the album "Fare Thee well Love". Love it! Love Canada! New immigrant, New Fan Tony Tony Chen <tonychentie@yahoo.com> Toronto, ON Canada - Monday, November 27, 2000 at 19:20:04 (PST) I've been a fan for years, and it's about much more than the music (which takes my breath away every time I hear it). It's about the wonderful spirit of love and family that you collectively share and project to your audience. It inspires me to be a better husband, better father, and a better person. Thank-you for sharing your precious gift with us. Pat St.Laurent <pstl001@home.com> Sammamish, WA United States - Monday, November 27, 2000 at 18:54:19 (PST) I have always been a fan of the Rankins. Thank you.. I have enjoyed my visit. Colleen Canada - Thursday, November 23, 2000 at 08:06:52 (PST) Thanks, thanks, THANKSSSSS!!! I've heard of "the Rankins" before, and heard their songs....but I must of had an "Oprah moment" the other night, because I really listened to the words and the fantastic talented voices and now I cant get enough of "the Rankins". Sue - Wednesday, November 22, 2000 at 18:16:56 (PST) I have loved the Rankin's music since I first heard Lisa Brown. Markaline <angels@compusmart.ab.ca> Canada - Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at 21:49:23 (PST) My heart and thoughts go out to each one of you during this holiday season. In so many
ways, John Morris is with you all and is helping you to keep warm, to keep loving one
another, and to keep music in your heart. While the loss of Johnny is far more significant
for you, myself along with all of your listeners share in his memory as much as we can.
Myself, I had hoped to complete a recording of a song I have completed in tribute to him
as part of your family and, in turn, send it to the four of you by Christmas. The song
itself is done, I just have not had the means of recording it. It's entitled "Johnny,
My Brother", recorded on piano, and in one voice... probably saprano, I'm not sure
(too long since I was in Royal Conservatory of Music :) ). Anyway, while I feel for your
family as a whole, I wrote it with Heather in mind: artistically speaking, I compare
Jimmy's voice to earth and rock, Cookie's to fire and ocean, Raylene's to nature, and
Heather's to the heavens...(eventhough she's probably not an angel all the time ;) ):
that's why I thought of her voice as I wrote it. While Johnny's loss has left a due hiatus
on the Rankin sound, I have been so pleased to hear echoes of your family's chants in the
voices of other Celtic singers as they visit out here. Three bands I have seen in the past
year (Paper Boys, Natalie MacMaster, Lehey)(my apologies for any bad spelling!) have been
full of energy and spawned memories of my one and only attendance of one of your shows (@
the P.N.E.) More enjoyable than the shows were sharing friendly chats with them after the
shows-love that Celtic hospitality :) . While most of my conversations were up-beat, I
shared a particularly warm moment with 'Michelle' of Lehey. When we were talking about
your good brother, she expressed how much she feels for any tightly-knit family who were
to loose a bother as she herself loves her own so much. The hug I shared with her is
extended to you in memory of John Morris and as a sincere wish of health and happiness for
all your friends and family as Christmas approaches and through the new year. It's hard to believe that close to a year has gone by since John Morris' death. One
memory of him that I will have is seeing him early on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the
Port Hood Arena on weekends that he was home, taking Michael to hockey practice. He was
always willing to stop and have a chat about anything. We have lost not only a great
talent, but a great person as well. Sally, Michael, and Molly, you are in my prayers, and
John Morris, Rest In Peace. I am hooked on The Rankins having only discovered them on Saturday 18th of November!!!I
was sorry to hear of the death of John, and my deepest sympathy to his family.I look
forward to purchasing all of their CD's. Maura I just found the website today. Reading all of the above I just discovered, sadly, that
The Rankins won't be touring anylonger - and have they disbanded? From the read, it
appears that way. I just want to say that I am more and more moved and cheered by their
uplifting, soulful and magical music...I will share it with my own children someday and
pass it on so the spark stays alive. Holiday Cheers! Karis (31 - Southern California) I discovered your wonderful group on a visit to Nova Scotia two years ago. I have
purchased most of your CD's. I know do hope that you will do another CD as a group even
though you are all now doing individual performancees. Hia i like ur singing its nice,my dream is tobecome an aminator. Have only just found this wonderful page about a group that I and my family thoroughly
enjoy. Did not know about the families very sad loss, heartfelt sympathy. You will never
know the hours of enjoyment we get from listening to your music. Thank you all. Thank you for bringing me home. I would love to hear when you are returning to the
south, especially Nashville, TN. I am planning a return to Inverness, July 2001 and I
truly hope to see you in concert. Thanks to all of you! This site is wonderful for those of us that life in the states
and are Rankin starved. I still get tears when I think of the loss of John Morris. I hope
this email finds his family and friends well. If Claire ever reads this I am the fellow
from Maine who stopped by after the FishAid concert. We met her aunt at the concert and
she introduced us to Claire and took us on a little Mabou tour. THIS IS A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF MEMORIES! WELL DONE! MY HUSBAND AND I CELEBRATED OUR
25TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN CAPE BRETON THIS PAST AUGUST. WE STARTED WITH MABOU BEING OUR
FIRST DESTINATION. AT THE LIGHTHOUSE WE MET SHEENA RANKIN WHO WAS THE LIGHTHOUSE GUIDE FOR
THE AREA'S HISTORY. SHE WAS VERY PLEASANT AND INFORMATIVE. WE ALSO STOPPED BY THE CEMETARY
WHERE JOHN MORRIS IS BURIED AND SAID A PRAYER. THE SCENIC VIEW WAS BEAUTIFUL AND THE
PEOPLE EVEN MORE SO. AS THIS WAS OUR FIRST VISIT THERE WE WERE SO IMPRESSED THAT WE WILL
GO AGAIN. IT BEING A MILLENNIUM YEAR, AND OUR ANNIVERSARY, WE WANTED TO FEEL A LITTLE OF
OUR HISTORY WHICH WE SURELY DID! I was lucky enough to have seen all of you perform at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga - this
was some years back. Just about all of your songs speak to something in me. One stanza in
particular - theres a lot more ot gain from this living than wealth. There's a lesson to
learn with devotion. Be kind to all others - as well as yourself - or you'll drift like a
boat out on the ocean. anyway - I am sorry to learn that your group disbanded but I
understand. all the best and occasionally collaborate on music again!! please?? Recently received "Do You Hear", played it, fell in love with it and
Christmas began early for me. Have been a fan for several years and had the pleasure of seeing the Rankins twice
whilst on tour in UK. Good site Keep up the good work I tried to open the bookmark I had on the official Rankins web site. When I could not
open that site I searched and found this site. It's nice to have a source of information
on a band that I discovered early in the 90's and I still enjoy the music of the Rankins
very much. Keep up the good work, Kimberley! Very nice page. Love your music. Alisa Great page! I love the Rankins music and they're great in concert (or WERE I guess is
the proper term). Keep up the great work. Just arrived in Melbourne from England. I am a huge fan and have seen them on a couple
of occasions while they toured the UK. I hope to see them here one day !! Oh, Happy
Birthday Heather.. Regards Rob happy birthday heather many more to come have just been playing uprooted and enjoying
very much kimberley ids doing a wonderfuljob with this web site many many thanks for all
you and the others have given to me & my family speak soon regards "P" I love this groupa nd the page is done really well your music is very easy to listen to
and is music I plan and hope to listen to for some time I must say after 20 years (and only being 26)of singing and choir, I have never felt
about music the way I feel about The Rankins. I have never heard such powerful, yet such
"grace-filled" music in my life. If it weren't for a friend of mine from Nova
Scotia having introduced me to your music, I truly don't feel that I would feel this way
about ANY other band or group. Your songs have fulfilled a void in me at times when I
needed it most, and brought happiness to me and those around me. I would give more than
anything to be able to see you all perform, but it doesn't seem too likely being that I
live about as far south as you can get (the outskirts of Houston, Texas). I have
personally turned about 30 people on to your beautiful harmonies, and will keep
"selling" your sounds for as long as I live. I do believe than John Morris lives
through your music and in your hearts, and although I did not know him as a brother - or
even personally - I feel that he would love to see you all continue making the sweet
sounds of song so that he can rejoice upstairs. May you all be able to heal your wounds of
his passing, and allow other Rankin fans to be born through the wonderful music he made.
God Bless. For one of my classes at high school I had to do an Alteres Ofrenda. I choose to do it
on John Morris because I thought it would help me find closure It didn't. Happy Birthday
Heather!!!!! I've been since I first heard you and your sisters on Celtic Tides. Happy Birthday Heather. I would like to say that My father and I love you all very
much. Your voices are outstanding. I happen to be singing Rise Again for a Family
Anniversary. I was told you know my inlaws. Wilma and Crosbie Barnes. ( nee Donkers) Again
I love you all and keep making those cd's. Happy Birthday Heather and Best Wishes and great happiness for the year to come. I have
been a fan of your's since the day I heard Free Thee Well Love so many years ago. Being
from the east coast of Canada your music all brings me home. God Bless and Take Care. Happy BIRTHDAY Heather!!! ;-) I hope this new coming year brings you all the best! I
bought your Christmas album last year and I'm making sure that my band members learn your
song"The Christmas Star" Good for you writing that....It's very beautifull. But
then You are a beautifull person. Good luck I love listening to your music, it's so relaxing. I can't wait to get some CD's. Hope you have a great one! I know you will! Happy Birthday Heather! I just found this website. I have been a fan of the Rankins music for some time. I
still thoroughly enjoy the uniqueness and beauty of their songs. What ever drives singing
groups apart is very personal and understandable to a degree. What is so sad about the
break up of a group such as the Rankins is that what they produced together was magical
and moving. Individually they have talents and may do well. But the blending of their
spirits and singing gifts was such a rare and beautiful thing. Again, I realize that there
are very personal and deep reasons for such a separation but I sincerely hope the group
will strongly consider coming together again. I believe such beauty has its beginnings for
a big purpose. It would be marvelous to experience the "family" once more
bringing joy to so many. I must say that listening to the Rankins gives me joy and an old time feeling of
country music. I just started listening to CCM on 91.7 FM and I love it. Its different
from USA. I am looking for all their albums so if anyone can help and if i can get them in
New York please let me know they are GREAT!! Some time ago I contacted you seeking information on a song by the Rankin Family. I
didn't even know the title, but you did. You told me it was "Sir James Baird"
and that it was on the Grey Dusk of Eve CD . Well, after much searching, I finally found a
copy on ebay and managed to win the auction. It arrived in todays mail. I immediately put
it in the cd player and skipped to the last song.. Within 30 sec., I literally had tears
in my eyes, for no other reason than the absolute aching beauty of this music! It may seem
silly, but I just wanted to write to say Thank You And to let you know how much your
"small favor" has meant to me.. I hope this finds you very well and Happy. I LOVE THE RANKIN FAMILY I FEEL BAD ABOUT THE DEATH OF YOUR BROTHER I LOOK FORWARD TO
SEEING YOU ALL IN PERSON I LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC & I LOVE IT YIUR FAN DOROTHY Hi,I Love the Rankins music soooo much.I only ever heard one of their songs
occasionally on the radio when I had forgotten to take tapes with me in the car---then I
was at my friend Wendy's house and she played Endless Seasons for me --I WAS BLOWN
AWAY--I'd no idea they had such variety of sound and talent---I also love the fact that
they are family, just something warm and fuzzy about that--I am a Maritime transplant--from
New Brunswick.I have worked in different cities across Canada as a Nanny. When I lived in
Kelowna B.C.I travelled to Banff and Calgary to hear the Rankins. On July 4,1998[my
birthday] I was at the Calgary Stampede for their concert,It was awesome,I told my
friend,"If I never heard them in concert again it will have been enough" ,it was
THAT good!! I was so sad to hear of John Morris' death---what a horrible tragedy,I am one
of six siblings and life would go on but it would never be the same-- Cheers to all you
other lucky Rankin fans ,it's nice to enjoy a group so worthy of admiration----Dianne

MITCHELL I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, The Rankin Family music, I went to Nova Scotia this
summer, and I can truly say I know why all the musicians from the east coast sing about
their home, its just beautiful there.(and great people) I went as far as Hawksberry Cape
Breton, I couldn't be happier because I felt I was getting closer to the Rankin's.(Ha Ha
Ha)Can't wait to go back there again! My favourite songs are Eyes Of Margaret, Blue Eye
Suzie, Feel The Same Way Too, ..... I love it all. Great website, glad I found it. the rankins are a very good group Our kids (Bethany and Abigail have been listening to "Fare Thee Well Love"
since nursery days. Abi (10) still does 'Tell my Ma' as her party piece. We look forward
to your next visit and Abi especially hopes the song will be back in the repertoire.
Thanks for all the happy car journeys. Hi! Just thought I'd sign in, Listened to Endless Seasons on the way home for lunch
today! Don't hear much music in Florida like That!! LOVE IT!! God's Peace, Tammie I've just recently found the Rankins AND this website. Two great finds in a short time.
I hope that the family will be able to overcome the loss of John, and that their futures
will include recording as a group once again. It would be a shame to never again hear the
blending of their voices. Thankyou for this wonderful site. We'll watch for the news that
the Rankin Family is again making music. Kimberley just found your webpages and not that long ago the Rankins,on a visit to our
family in Canada heard this wonderful sound from my Great Neices (age 9) CD player and I
was hooked she has a great taste in music! So since then I have made a collection of their
CDs and our family houses here in England and that beautiful and vast country Canada that
brings so many wonderful memories of places, people and now music together. Thanks Mick. Wonderful site, Kimberley! I first discovered the Rankins when I happened across their
live performance of "Rise Again" on The Nashville Network. I was smitten. What a
gorgeous sound! I'm a Maritimer torn from home to work on the prairies. Listening to the Rankins
practically sends that ocean air back into my lungs, and keeps me from getting all that
homesick. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO TELL YOU FOLKS HOW MUCH I ENJOY YOUR MUSIC.IT HAS SOOTHED A SORE
SPOT IN MY SOUL OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS SINCE I FOUND OUT MY TWO YEAR OLD NEPHEW WAS
DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER. IF IT IS NOT TO MUCH TO ASK COULD YOU FOLKS SAY A SMALL PRAYER,FOR
A SMALL BOY IN A SMALL WORLD? SINCERLY AND GRATEFULLY YOURS,BOB Greetings....despite my many musical tastes my wife and i always took great pleasure in
listening to the Rankins music. My children were both brought into the world while The
Rankins music in the backgroud comforted my wife.it comforted my wife during her
chemotherapy and she passed away while "endless season's" was playing in the
background....i just wanted to say thank you for your music and the comfort it brought
her...and although some songs will now always bring tears to my eyes...they will provide
me with the same comfort it gave her....I empathize with the loss of your brother....he
wrote beautiful songs....thanks again Scott Riley Hi this is the first site on the Rankins I have found! It's so COOL! It's to bad I
found it after the separation! But hey better late then never!!! Anyway my favourite video
is Fare Thee Well! Movin On and Bells are also great! I ask that you will send me the lyrics to the song Cold Winds as I lost the words to
it. It is a wonderful song. The rankins are the greatest group I have heard. I send my
love to all and pray that they will return and sing as a group again in honour of their
lost family members. They would want them to continue singing. Rankin family rocks and i love their music. Great site, love the music you guys play. Being from states, don't get to hear good
folk music at all. Driving a truck brings up to Ontario and Quebec o a weekly basis. Got
turned on to your music and can't get enough of it. Like a whole new world of music up
there. Sorry to hear of your familys misfortunes, keep up the great work and may God Bless
You All. Thanks again, Gary An elderly couple from my church traveled in their RV all the way to Nova Scotia a
couple of years ago -- they couldn't stop talking about all the great music being made
there! They brought back the Rankins' "North Country" CD and let me listen to
it, and I really like it. I plan to buy a Rankins CD of my own soon. But I'm saddened to
hear about John's accident and to hear that the group is splitting up. I wish the
individual members much success as they venture forth on their own. Thanks, Kimberly, for
this website to keep us up to date on these talented people! Thanks for a great page, Kimberly - you have done the Rankins well! My thoughts and
prayers are with the family through their recent loss of John, I know the entire country,
if not the world, will be feeling the pain of John's untimely death. I am happy to say
that I was honored to be able to see the Rankins perform live at the Calgary Stampede a
couple of years ago - it was the greatest experience of my life, thanks! i was greatly saddened today to here the news about john morris i once only saw the
family playing in london some while ago and was so very impressed by the great vocal
talent & the great family atmosphere sincere sympathy for the great loss ,hope that
the music will still continue god bless and keep you all sincerley peter harris hoddesdon
england Excellent site! John Rankin lives in the heart of Cape Breton. Saddened I am by the loss of John Morris. I love the music he played and the tradition
he carried for all of us, and for the future. Also, I miss hearing from members of the
band, and held oh so tightly to my radio on CBC Radio 1, poor as the signal was here in
the States, to hear Jimmy's songs at the Kitchen Party. I miss you all, and would fain
hear again and again the songs with voices of clover honey sweetness. As a fan I will miss John. Best luck to the band.I am learning Gaidhlig na H-Alba due
in part to the bands work. Your influence goes farther than you think. Nice site Thanks Kimberley for being so helpful it's so appreciated. Jean We love your singing. Hey, My name is Krissy, I am a close friend of the family of John Morris. I really
think this website is very beautiful. Anyway I was really wondering if you had the
words/tabs for "Eyes Of Margaret." It is my Favorite song. If you do please
email me back. Thanks alot. Sincerly, Krissy Kimberly! I was looking around the web to see what's going on with my favorite band and
I found your site. As programmer myself, I must say you have done an excellent job with
this site. Thank you for quenching my thirst for Rankin Material! I wish I had programmers
as talented as you on staff! Joseph We have 5 or 6 Rankin family CD's and tapes. We enjoy all of them. My personal favorite
is entitled "the Rankin family". This CD has on it my very favorite song of all
time. It is the wonderful piano piece of "Memories of Bishop MacDonald" I was so
shocked and saddened to learn that John has passed away. He was a talented man and, I
understand, a genuinely good guy. We have attended only a few concerts in our lives but we
went to the Rankin concert in Calgary (about 2 1/2 hours away) a few years ago and we were
totally thrilled. I made a pact with myself a long time ago that if at all possible, no
matter how busy I am, when that song comes on, I will sit down and relax and enjoy it. One
of my sons play the piano very well and another son plays the guitar. I have told them
many times that I want them to play this song at my funeral. They pointed out to me that
they need the music. I have not been able to locate the music. Can you help me? I would
appreciate it so much. when I remember seeing the Rankin's at Maxville or simple playing one of thier CD's, I
understand what a loving and caring family has grown once again from Nova Scotia. With the
likes of Natalie MacMasters and Howie MacDonald, and of course my favories The Rankins,
what is it about Nova Scotia that allows so much talent to be claimed by such a wee part
of the world?? Thanks a lot Kimberly for keeping up your sight. It's a great tribute to a super
talented family and musical group. They'll always be #1 in my book. I've been listening to
their music ever since I first heard them on the CBC Halifax program called Atlantic
Airwaves. I told everyone that I seen for the next 3 days that I'd heard this talented
young family group from Cape Britan and they're gonna be big! Then I had a chance to go an
see them when they kicked off their first ever national tour in Perth-Andover New
Brunswick. What a show! We were dancin in the isles. They even hung around after the show
and talked to us. Was that Heather Rankin I saw singing back-up for Carly Simon on the
Rosie O'Donnell Show? Randy McNally Aroostook, New Brunswick Love them!! Is there a CD out there with moving on.. and also there is a song I heard
this morning.. beautiful.. its something about gardens? Thanks, Nicole Dear Kimberly, First of all, thanks for the labor of love that your website is. It is
helping, somehow, to fill the void in the hearts of The Rankins' true-blue fans. I just
heard of John Morris' death a couple of days ago, and I literally wept. The music, with
its harmonies only siblings can produce, so spiritual, has been like a balm in my life.
The Rankin Family was introduced to mom and dad by their teen-age daughter, proving that
music can unite the generations! She had heard them at Nashville's "Summer
Lights", a great festival in the streets of "Music City, U.S.A." At that
time, though, the music was available only from Canada. But a three-week family vacation
to Nova Scotia brought us into direct contact with the great influence of their music. At
Upper Clements Park, the youth were only singing covers of the tunes on the first two
projects. We heard The Rankins in concert three times, in three historic venues. We heard
them at the great Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and later (one of their final concerts we
now know) at Cafe Milano, also in Nashville, a small and intimate showcase for great
artists. It was a treasure then, and an even greater treasure now -- if, endeed, they
never perform together again. One Friday afternoon, I came home from work to a delayed
Rankin Family Newsletter and discovered that they were in concert th at night in
Lousville, KY -- a 450 mile roundtrip. My wife and I sped away with a promise of tickets
waiting at the box office. We "lost" an hour due to the time zone change and
raced on, desperately trying to get there for the whole event. There was no opening act.
We were delayed finding the theatre, and parking in a major city was not easy to come by.
We were running about 20 minutes late, we thought. But we entered the theatre as the
Rankins were making their way onto the stage. One of the things my wife and I will say to
each other every so often is, "WE HEARD THE FIRST NOTE!" and we will recall one
of the great, pure moments of joy in our life! After an extended season of healing, those
of us who feel so connected to this family and all they represent can only pray that there
will be an occasional reunion and that they will at least continue to record. The road is
a cruel taskmaster, and they must, I am sure, leave that behind. But maybe -- just maybe
-- they will reconsider the unique position they are honored and blessed to hold in the
lives of so many of us. I remember when my enamoured daughter wrote the three sisters
asking for lyrics to some of the songs years and years ago, they actually replied promptly
with many lyrics hand-written! This good and kind gesture to a Tennessee teenager's
request placed them forever in a place apart in our family's heart. I pray that the God of
all comfort will comfort the hearts of each Rankin family member. Thanks for an
opportunity to share from the heart. Hi Kimberley, I am living in Canada almost for 8 years, and in this time the 'Leahy'
music hook me so much. I am from Argentina. My sorry for the lost of John Morris, my deep
condolences for all the people who love him. I live in Ottawa and Iam planned to go to
some Rankin concert in the summer. Please could you indicate me some places or links that

just saw a chnl 6 show (re-run i guess). inspired me (a 52 year old, father of a 9 &
12 yr old, mtn bike racer). enough to get me off my butt, and try to locate a next
concert. too little, too late. so sorry to hear of your loss (John). lost my dearest
friend & brother (Marc) to brain cancer last year. illness or accident? no matter.
hope you carry on in memory of... sometimes feels like bullshit, easier said than done.
i'll go back to the site now, hoping to find a NS performance. let me know where-when, if
you have the time. I have listened to the Rankins for many years now and I was sad to hear they had parted
musical ways.I was lucky to have heard them a few times when in the UK.Now I have a PC I
was able to join the fan club.Good to see such a huge following.Miss you much John .Im
sure you are keeping the angels dancing. I am a newer member of the fan club. I first saw the Rankins on a tv video singing
"I'm Movin' On." I bought the CD with that song on it and became hooked. I'm
disappointed they no longer sing as a group. I wish them every success as solo artists. I've followed the Rankins for several years, and tried to see them each time the have
visited Scotland. I have only just set up my Web / e-mail system, and yours was the first
site I found ...... it's great ! Just wanted to say thank you. Hi Kimberley! My name is Guenter. I'm from Austria. I've been to a scout camp in
Scotland (Blair Atholl) and there we danced to a song called "Tell my ma". Now
we want to sing this song with our scoutgroup in Austria. But i hav not got the Lyrics. I
bought the Record "Fare Thee Well Love" but there were no lyrics inside. So
please please send me this lyrics. Many Thanks to you. This is just a quick hello to complement you on your site. Our house here thoroughly
enjoyed the music and we were deeply saddened with John Morris' passing. We are glad you
continue to showcase this remarkable family. Thanks, for all the hard work you are doing. You have what must be the best fan site on
the net. Great news about Jimmy doing some solo recordings, I just hope we get to hear
them over in the U.K. Thanks Again, Pete. Well Kimberley I think you can be proud of yourself. For just over a year now, you have
kept this website going. Thanks to all those fans out there that have contribruted
pictures, comment and information to keep this website alive. While the previous 12 months
has had it low points, with the group parting to go their individual ways and the tragic
loss of John Morris, I'm sure there will be some positive spin-offs. I look forward to a
solo albumn from Jimmy (once again I'll have to rely on Kimberley to supply as the music
industry here in New Zealand can't recognise good music even if they fall over it!!) and I
am sure Heather, Raylene and Cookie will do very well in their own solo careers. It is all
you fans out there and Kimberley, that through this web page the Rankins can see love and
support that we all have for them and their music ..... Who knows, maybe one day they will
get back together and the spirit will live on for a long time to come yet. I will miss hearing the group on TV and concerts. Word is the Rankins are considering
country music. The state of country music is so dismal that any change can only be for the
better. My they be as good in a new music venue as in celtic the tradition. Sing on folks. Beautiful site, wonderful music. The Rankins should come to Florida. Please keep doing
what you do. Only just heard of John Norman's death, truly sorry that such a great talent has been
lost to the world. I hope and pray that one day the remaining Rankins will bring pleasure
to our world with their wonderful voices and great music. I always enjoyed their visits to
Scotland and their concerts were an annual highlight in our year. Kim, thanks for being the person that keeps this all together.. More people should know
about the Rankins.. Keep the word going Thanks for making this info. available. Super job! Great site Kimberley! Thanks for sending me all of those pictures. I hope you can make
it to Celtic Colors because I can tell you really love the music of this place. Good luck!
Ang Sure miss Rankins---saw them last year in Northhampton,MA and Springhill,NS. Hop
something happens in future. Keep up good work with web site. Your unOfficial Rankins Website is very well organized and a pleasure to browse. Thank
you for the time and effort you give to maintain it. I have always enjoyed the music of
the Rankin Family and recently discovered this site. I was shocked and saddened to hear
about John Morris; may he be remembered forever through his music. Also that the Rankins
have broken up; but rather than lament their desire to branch out individually let's be
thankful for the pleasure they have given us over the past 10 years, and wish them all the
best in their new endeavors. Thanks for keeping up the site, Kimberley. It looks great! The Rankins continue to be
my most favorite and prized CD's out of my extensive collection spanning all genres. A
Canadian friend introduced me to the Rankins years ago and from then on I was hooked.
Since their breakup I've tried to find a "replacement" group, to no avail. Let
us know of any similar sounding groups out there, if there are any. Loved John Morris' playing. Great Personality! Nice tribute and lots of other links!
Enjoyed this...thanks! "CAPERS ONLY"...Join the Cape Breton Webring at the above
URL...later...s Thank you all for the music. Jimmy, when are you going to put out a solo CD? I think
you're the finest talent this country has seen in a long time and I love your songs. God
bless. GREAT SITE. God Bless John Morris!! About seven years ago I was drivin home and out of the radio came a male and female
singin. I don't hooked easily on anything, however, although I know it, I was listening to
the RANKINS for the first time! What Voices and Originality... Excellent, That's the word
for the writing and singin of the RANKINS... Thank You Kimberly..... I just found this website, and so just found out about the tragic death of John Morris.
So sad to hear this; I have been enjoying the group's music very much in the last few
years. Curious that John's birthdate is the same as mine; that is just another interesting
connection. I'll pray for the family; your loss is shared by many. Hi Kimberley, it is with great pleasure i sign into the visitors book. I first heard
the Rankins play in Bridgewater Nova Scotia at their "BIG X". I was hooked then
and still am. The beauty and sincerity of their music makes the Rankins truly exceptional.
You should drive through the Scottish Highlands listening to them, it makes the hairs rise
on the back of the neck. Keep rocking guys. |
