Love your music and have for a while. Even though my late father was from Newfoundland I love the music from Cape Breton Island and the Celtic music. I took my new husband and his daughter to your concert back a few years ago at Massey Hall.

Hi to all the familly and band members
I just saw a programme on TV about you all which showed some concert material as well. Excellant stuff too. What talent! I had to write to you straight away having heard just how good you are at folk material. I am a singer-songwriter living in Northern Ireland and three of my songs came to mind as I could just hear you making a great job of them. If you get a chance perhaps you could check them out at my MP3 site - they're called "The Lake Of 31 Miles" (a song (I wrote last year while doing a concert in Ottawa, and holidaying in Quebec), Also a couple of songs with a celtic feel - "Safe And Warm" and "Needs Must". They are available for free download. Let me know what you think but I'm convinced they'd suit you to the ground!
Whatever, Keep making great music and I wish you success and happiness as you do.
Kind regards
Brendan

I spent a good part of last week watching A Sigh and a Wish. Excellent stuff. Raylene sings some absolutely wonderful songs and her personality really comes through. I recommend it to any fan. I'm looking forward to seeing the sisters in concert next week. I looked at getting tickets for the London show, but idiot that I am, I'll have to settle for Saturday's show in Kitchner. Congratulations to Jimmy on all the nominations. I hope it's a clean sweep.

HI folks:

I am looking for the sheet music for the song Rise Again.
I just started playing the flute again -- after a fifteen year intermission -- because I wanted to learn that song.
I was surew it would be in your song book, and I was so disapointed to find that it isn't.

Perhaps I could be directed to the person who wrote the song??

Hope this note does the trick. Thanks in advance.

Could someone E mail me directly because I seldom have time to log on these days.

After spending a month on business in Canada, I fell in love with your music. It strikes a chord in me and brings back both memories and inspiration to learn more about music for myself. I'm forwarding some of your music to friends of mine who probably haven't heard of you, but will appreciate the quality music you produce. Keep up the good work and I hope to see you perform one day.

I am hoping to contact Lloyd Rankin. He saw me performing live in Regina's
Victoria Park in the summer of 2001 and later called me to say that The Rankin
Family would be pleased to cover the cost of a CD cover for me.
Lloyd Rankin spoke to a man by the name of Horst Hamm about doing the
cover for me and Horst has since created it but neither of us has The Rankin's phone
#. If anyone out there can contact Lloyd Rankin, I could surely use the help that
The Rankin family offered back in the summer. I have spent all my savings pressing my CD.
Thanks so much!

Hi Folks, Just had to drop a note to let Jimmy known how much I enjoyed the concert at Stathspey Place on Nov.09,2001. I don't think it could be better. During the concert I hoped'"please don't let the power go out." But then I realized that even with all the high tech equipment, it still comes down to two basic things. (1) Jimmy and (2) the guitar and we had both. Hope to hear alot more of your music in the future. Keep it up. And thank you again.

Dear Rankins,

Although I listen to your CD's often I came to your web site to find a place where I could listen to your wonderful music in person. When you came to The Coach House in Southern California a few years ago I was delighted to be in the audience. I have longed for that opportunity again. After reviewing your concert schedule and guestbook it looks as though the concert with all of you together will just have to live on as a cherished memory. Time apparently doesn't stand still for your family either.
Probably the best way to cherish your gifts in the future is to beam with delight and bask in the joy I feel every time my really-cool-california-girl-children switch to your CD's from some of their other contemporary favorites. They also cherish your music.... it evokes emotions and spiritual responses that are not experienced with any other music. They sing your songs so loudly.... especially RISE AGAIN or tenderly as the music demands.
Thank you for your gift.... so glad I found you years ago through an NPR interview. Will try to connect with you next summer somewhere in Nova Scotia.

Peace and Gratitude

Beautiful sounds that give a sense of connectedness, wondering if some ancient flag on the DNA strands recognizes family at some level... much the same as the impossible to describe feelings when hearing the bagpipes in the military tatoo at Edinborough Castle for the first time. Just wanted to let you know I was at Jimmy's concert in Summerside and man it was incredible. The Song Dogs were great in support of him and he did a great mix of Rankins tune and his new stuff. He had everyone up and dancing in the isles and singing along with him and did a three song encore in which Captain Harmony was the finale. It was a truly great show and hope everyone gets a chance to see it. Take care.

I miss the Rankin family with all my heart , it makes me so sad when I think that there beautiful music is no more. I wish things could always stay the same becuase I have never been happier in my life then I am when I was at one of there concerts , smiling from ear to ear. I miss your music , your great shows , your great personalities. I wish I could know you guys in real life because I am such a big fan. I am happy that Jimmy put out his own cd because it is new stuff to listen to , not that I am sick of any of the old stuff , I actually love every single song off every cd. I have them all , even two of some . My only thing I could wish for would be for you guys to get together and do a tour of Canada or something. I would die a happy girl if I saw you guys play a show where you played the hits from each cd. I want nothing more from life. Your all blessed with amazing voices , you write such beautiful songs that always remind me of CB . The world wants you to keep on singing and sharing your wonderful talent with all of us. Thank you I am done now , I think lol. I get sappy when I talk about something I love so much. If someone wants to e-mail and chat about fave rankin memories or something please do. I want to start by saying I have loved The Wonderful Rankin Family my whole life. I have grown up listening to only them. I am a dedicated fan and for fourteen years I have wanted to meet them but haven't yet been sucessful. I was so upset when they called it quits. A part of me died. I love their music and whenever I was depressed I would listen to songs and hear the wonderful messages they sent out and I would feel so good again. Nothing will ever be as pure and beautiful as the music they made. I wish them all the best from life , I know how hard it must have been to loose thier brother I lost my father when I was very young. It changes your life. I prey for Raylene everyday that she will stay wonderfully healthy and never have to worry about her cancer another day. I am glad that Jimmy put out his own CD it kind of eased my poor mind. I feel like a part of my life let go when they stoped putting out cd's , like everything was changing , I was getting older , letting go. I don't want to let them go as I have been forced to let go of so much already. Your cd's are in all 3 slots of my stero , I have a few copies of each so that some day my own children will be able to listen to the beautiful words of this magic island. Your biggest fan in the universe. Lots of luck and love in all your futures.
Love always

Hard to know exactly what to say - or indeed how to say it... I was fortunate enough to visit a wondrous family in Newfoundland last year; I still wonder how that miracle occurred. Through that I was introduced to the Rankins, and since returning to Oz (though leaving a big chunk of my heart on The Rock) I have used that amazing Chapters Bookstore's online service (bother the US giant Amazon.com!) to slowly build a collection of Rankin Family cds. I now have "The Rankin Family", "Fare Thee Well Love", "North Country" (my favourite) and "Endless Seasons".

To say I like the music would be so far from the truth. Two little tales. I attend a wine bottling each year, at a friend's farm about 45 kms southeast of here - I help set up, cook, bottle wine and so on. I also get to supply some of the music. Late that night two groups of people were left; some round an open fireplace inside the farmhouse, more round a fire outside under a million shining stars. I had recorded a whole bunch of stuff on an old reel to reel tape recorder including some Rankins songs. When "Rise Again" came on I realised that the murmur of chat had ceased, and that thirty or so Australians who had almost certainly never heard anything of the Rankins, all stopped and listened...

I sometimes listen to that song and find it difficult not to have tears well...

The other tale concerns a little girl I take care of - she is my children's half-sister (although none of us would ever call her that). Her mother, my ex-wife, is in Europe, has been since December last. I agreed to take care of Ysobel while she is gone, and she moved in here with me and my children.

It has been very hard for her in many ways - adapting to a new environment, going to school for the first time (she turned five here), and living in a house where there is no adult female...

Somehow she has adopted the Rankins. North Country is in the cd stacker in the car and she insists every morning and afternoon that I play it on the way to (and from) school. Her favourite is "Lisa Brown" (which she thinks is "Mister Brown", though my kids try to tell her otherwise.

In times of stress she loves "Ho Ro Mo Nighean Donn Bhoideach" - I have glanced across at her, curled up on the front seat; serious little profile, singing along with the words...

She calls it her cd, and has asked whether she can have it when her mother comes home and she returns to living with her. I could not bear to part with it so I guess I will be calling on Chapters yet again...

My Newfoundland friend wrote me to say that John Morris had died, and I can only say that it jolted me with as much instantaneous grief and pain as that when John Lennon died...

Since finding this website I found the information concerning Raylene's breast cancer and that too was a shock. I will beam healing energy as hard as I can - the world needs more people like the Rankins....

Just a short note to inquire about Raylene's condition. I have been out of touch with Rankin news, and have just tonight discovered the new website. Only by listening to Heather's CBC interview did I learn about Raylene's breast cancer. I hope she is doing well.

I had the opportunity to see The Rankin Family only about 3 times, first in North Carolina at Merlefest, then here in Kentucky at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. The last time I saw the family perform together was at a small venue called Headliners, in Louisville KY, in the middle of the week. My good friend Phil Kaufman was handling the tour, as he was on hiatus from road managing Emmylou Harris. Phil contacted me to publicize the show on Emmylou On Line, the newsletter I edit.

It was such a thrill to meet the family and talk with them briefly on their bus. They were all so warm and friendly. I still smile when I recall the privilege of driving Phil and Cookie to a local mini-market to get provisions for their all-night trip up to Maryland.

If possible, please pass these comments along to as many Rankins as possible. I only wish I could get up to Canada (somewhere) to see a performance of the sister's upcoming Christmas show. Their harmonies are heavenly.

Hello my dear Rankins. So sorry for the loss of John Morris. I first heard you at a concert with Mary Black in Chicago in 1996, I think. Your music touched my soul and forever changed me. I have all your CD's except "Do You Here..."(I'll order it soon). I BEG the girls to continue recording with the North Country producer. I have both the original cd, as well as the US compilation release. This was your finest hour. I love all of it expecially "Borders and Time", "Fisherman's Son" and Turn That Boat Around". You could have a GREAT career on your own. Please, please consider it. All my love and gratitude,

Galen Prenevost
ps Your beloved mother, Kaye, wrote to me back in 1996 and left a sweet message on the card. Slainte

A quick review of Jimmy's Toronto performance this afternoon. Wow! If you liked Song Dog, the album, you're gonna love Song Dog, the tour. The band's really tight and Jimmy really comes alive when he sings. I stayed for both sets and my friend, a long time fan of the Rankins, got a CD and a autograph. She asked about Raylene and Jimmy said she is doing better and that's wonderful, wonderful news. Hard to believe, but some of Jimmy's songs actually sound better live. He concluded each set with a Rankin family song. The first one was completed with Let It Go, which for some inexplicible reason I'd never heard, and the second set with The Same Way Too. Needless to say the crowd loved them both and I now own Uprooted. Thanks Jimmy. I wanted to say hi, but you looked like you were in a hurry to get the Mike Bullard thing.

"Song Dog" is one of those rare cd's that you can listen to from start to finish and not skip any songs. I've been listening to it so much. It's a masterpiece, as far as I am concerned... the lyrics, the melodies - Jimmy is a very very talented songwriter. It's reassuring to know that there are still songwriters like Jimmy around in this day and age. Very refreshing! My favorite song on the album is "This is the hour". I can relate so much to it... Maritimers leaving the East coast to find work out West... it's so common. I just can't say enough about the cd. I've been recommending it to everyone I know, forcing them to listen, and when they do, they all agree that it's brilliant. I hear alot of James Taylor influences in his songwriting which is very cool! I'm planning to buy tickets for his show at the Capitol Theatre on October 30th. Tickets go on sale tomorrow! I can't wait to see him live for the first time. I'm a long time Rankins fan but I have to say that Jimmy has always been my favorite! Rock on!

Hi Raylene,
Probably by the time you receive my Birthday wishes your birthday will be over for another year.I hope you had a really nice day. I was thinking of you today and wondering if you had received my letter and card that I mailed to you a while ago.
After Tuesday's devastating events with our U.S. neighbours it has been nice to be thinking of something pleasant like your birthday.
Brian and I look forward to seeing you in December when you Cookie and Heather perform your Chrismas concert. Until then take care and we hope you are feeling well.

For the last few weeks I have pondering the situation about a fellow who said he was "Lloyd Rankin" in Kamloops. He in fact had many beleiving in him and many others as well. Not to be nieve but I guess it was it has become humiliating to say the least. Last week I was shown a newspaper article about this imposter about his six month jail sentence. Good! But that's not all. Would you get back to me so I can add more to the light of this embarrising situation. Many people were fooled I'm glad I'm not the only one! Thanks Jim Lambert

I am from Cape Breton and have loved the Rankins since about 1987 when they were just a local group playing at Broadcove and Bigpond. I was so upset when they called it quits because I didn't want their great music to end , but it eases my mind now that Jimmy has put out his new cd , which is amazing by the way. I love every single song but I think my favorites are definatly:
The Mull River Shuffle
Lisa Brown
Endless Seasons
Tell My Ma
and The Orangedale Whistle

I even made my friends come with me to Mull River and Orangedale to see what they were singing about , the Orangedale ppl even gave me a few free postcards because they had never seen someone so excited to be there.

Hi!
I've been a great fan of your's.... It was around 6 years ago when I bought your CD.....On the way to Gaspe!!! It was actually one of my first CD's- and the perfect music for travelling...riding by the ocean and the small, old fashioned towns. Anyway, I'm now 18 years old, and 2 months ago, my Grandfather passed away, and I suggested to play "Rise Again" at the funeral, and we did. I would have to say that's my favourite. You guys have the great gift of diversifing your music- they tell great stories.
I, along with my parents will always be great fans of your's. Thanks for the great music!!!!

My husband surprised me just hours before the concert in Sydney with advanced tickets. It was a show so full of energy, I think I am still flying high on it. Jimmy started with Roving Gypsy Boy and sang all my favorite songs from the prior albums and many from his new new Song Dog album. Gordie Sampson was there right through with Howie MacDonald playing a few tunes along too. It was wonderful to see Heather coming up on stage. Jimmy seemed so happy to have her sing with him, every now and then they'd share a happy grin between them. They ended with The Mull River Shuffle and had every one there hoppin. ~

Hello,
I just love your song "Rise Agian". At one of my familys sacred danceing festivals, my sister, her friend Crystal and a very caring kind and beautiful woman named Wendy Morrel did a dance in honor of Crystal's deseced father. it was a very sad time for all and the song that they played was "Rise Again" I think that song just fills my heart up with light and sort of makes my want to cry. I love it so much. I made a tape with it on it and can't keep from playing it. Every day i have to listen to it. When i was five years old my father passed away. I think that was the saddest thing that has ever happend to me and then about a year ago a very good friend of mine (Carly Allgood) passed away in a car accident. I like to play that song to remind me of them and how much they ment to me. Carly didn't have any children because she was only 14, but the song (in my heart) sends out a message to her whole family and everyone that she ever knew or loved. Also, when i hear that song, it lights up my face knowing that my father can hear the sone and really feel the expression on my face of how much i miss him. I really belive in the line "we rise again, in the faces of our children" because if you knew and saw the look on my fathers face when he came home, or when he left the house, you would see that he just gets a little jump of joy in him because he knows that we will always be there for him no matter what and see him through hard times. I want to add, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!! Thank you for listening.

hi my name is rick rankin ( no relation ?) but i can't be sure.family trees confuse me so i'll give you a little information about myself, i've haven't met any of you or your family yet ,but wish to some day.congrads to cookie and george, wished john could have been there.it must have been hard on the whole community.i grew up living on air force bases across canada.i never met my grandfather. allen rankin who originally lived in port hood c.b.then moved to new glasgow.my dads name was fred rankin, he died in 93 . any way, i been playing keyboards and singing since the 80s in local bands parttime.and for the last two years I've gone solo. I play every wednesday night 7 to 9 at( the dock) a little irish ... yes irish pub in new glasgow .bruce guthro has a steak there every year after playing the riverfront jubilee.most of the music that i play and sing is by ear.and i would like to thank you guys for your music that inspired me to start playing that kind of music. I,ve been away from it for so long. On the 28th of july I was invited to play a wedding reception in cregnish c.b Clare and Blaze MacNeil,s daughter sherri. I wished I'd dropped over to mabou. as my 17 year old daugher name is heather rankin.people at the wedding were asking me if i was related to the rankin family,i don't know what to tell them. My mother showed me a grave by the chapel in cregnesh where my great grandfather was buried. his name was allen gillis. i never met him either. My mother says I get my talent from the gillis side.I met about 10 cousins I never knew I had. this is really bugging me as I'm 45 now and I only have one aunt and uncle left surviving, and they can't give me much information.sorry for the spelling mistaked as I don't write much.Clare MacNeil taught Natalie and Ashlie in high school and has tea with her mother on sundays after church. This blows me away I went down to port halksbury to her her play hoping to met her but she was flying out to Colorado that night.good luck Jim on your solo album .The single is GREAT. I know a good song when I hear it. I like the blue rodeo harmony.Well I guess I flapped my gums long enough.Maybe we'll meet someday. P.S, I've never played a kitchen party YET !!! yours truly rickrankin30@hotmail.com

My aunt and uncle were invited, and they invited me to come too, knowing that i am a huge fan of you guys. I have listened to you for as long as I can remember...and I love every song. Especially "Mairi's Wedding" on your first album.
I was rather disappointed that I didn't get to say hi to you at the reception, but you were always talking to people and it was quite crowded! But anyway, the music was excellent! Once again, Congratulations!!!

Hi!
Just wanted to pass on that I listened to your music all through my pregnancy and my (now) three year old is very much a fan. There's proof in that music for the fetus theory! He likes one song in particular with lots of clapping and yipping that he refers to as the "funny song" and requests it constantly! I also love the Rise Again song and was touched by it being played at a funeral by children for their mother who had passed away. SHe had listened to it and found it very uplifting in her days near the end. I was at the funeral with my mom and it was a very emotional piece to listen to. I recently lost a friend who left behind three young daughters. I gave them a copy of the song in hopes that they would find some solace in its words. Thank you.

Congratulations! I've been a fan for many, many years. My husband bought my very first CD for my birthday years ago, and I've collected each and every one since. I was very saddened by the death of John Morris, and I think of you family especially when my own family get together for celebrations of music and song. I've always been drawn to your songs, singing all the words even though I don't know or understand the words I'm singing. On my wish list for my birthday on August 22, is Jimmy's new CD(I've dropped a few subtle hints, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.) On my 35th birthday I received "Uprooted", and I distinctly hear my name in one of the songs (Mary Anna), I know the spelling isn't what it is on the words, but the sound is the same. Well good luck in your new life together as a married couple, Oh, by the way I won't soon forget your wedding day as our son Joshua was born on July 27, 1986. Best of luck with the new CD.

The Rankin Family is one of my favorite musical groups of all times! I've listened to the group for years, and the name of Jimmy's new CD sounds quite interesting. I'm sorry for the death of John Morris - it must have been tough. Where can I purchase Jimmy's CD, and/or a Rankin Family video? This is a really cool site!

Best wishes, Moriah

Hi Kimberley.
I just pulled up Jimmy Rankins web page, and see you in there under links.

That must be quite an honour.

I've listened to the CD a couple times already, but I won't give a real evaluation until I've read lyrics(thats why I went to the site) and so on.

It is a nice(but sad touch) that the CD was dedicated to John Morris.

Keep up the great work.

Rankin to play outdoor concert on Sydney's waterfront

Jimmy Rankin, whose debut solo album hit record stores this week, will headline Sydney's annual Action Week open-air concert on Aug. 11 at the Government Wharf on Sydney's waterfront.

After 10 years of touring, numerous hit singles, multiple Juno Awards and sales of over two-million albums with his siblings, The Rankins, Jimmy Rankin emerges with his album Song Dog and moves into the realm of solo singer-songwriter.

Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday at all Select-A-Seat and Rolling Phones locations in Cape Breton. A limited number of advanced tickets are available for $12.50, after which the price will be $15.

The concert was made possible through the co-operation between the Cape Breton Regional Municipality's Recreation Department, Moosehead Breweries and The Savoy Theatre.

The annual concert has featured well-known groups like The Rankins, Bruce Guthro, Leahy and Rawlins Cross in past years.

For more info, visit http://www.rankins.ca later today.

Thanks,

Kimberley

I picked up the Song Dog CD yesterday, and I am infact
listening to it as I type.

I've been wishing for a long time that Jimmy to do a
solo project, and it's well worth the wait.

I think it's a great CD, especially Midnight Angel.

Looking forward to an Atlantic tour...

I have visited the site a few times and enjoy coming here to see what is happening. I am a Canadian living in Chile and have been a Rankin fan for many years. My wife, who is Chilean, discovered them thru me. She loves them, especially many of the tracks on North Country. In fact, she loved that cassette so much she wore it out and all I had been able to find was the (fake) US version cd. Kimberly deserves a big thanks for all her efforts on this site, and especially for helping me to locate a cd of North Country, Canadian Version. It should be on its merry way to me soon, if it is not already.

I first heard of the Rankins on CMT when their video for "Movin' On" aired. It was the perfect visual for an excellent song. I bought that CD through cdnow.com, and have enjoyed it tremendously.

I was saddened, not long after that purchase, to hear of John's passing.

Nothing, I mean NOTHING beats family harmonies!

Peace!

Hey Guys,
Just wanted to see how everyone is...? I also play fiddle,
and bodhran,drums,etc.. I would have to say you have been one of my
biggest inspirations as a child and you all I still look forward to
meeting someday.. I remember when I was at the Center 200 in Sydney, Cape Breton
a long while back. It was storming bad outside,, SNOW>><< Their was like feet of it..
I was soooo impressed with the concert that when I got home I fell asleep with my stereo on
listening to your music. It's funny when you think about it but, everyone in Cape Breton, If
they can't play a few notes or humm a couple of bars to a fiddle tune. Their is something wrong.
I Wish you rankin girls would put out a traditional album of just yourselves in a livingroom aucustic.
I know the sound would be breathtaking.... Really ,, you should .... Paul MacDonald and Jerry Holland just
worked on an album called Crystal Clear and I was amazed at the sound........ No Piano ,, just fiddle.. If you hadn't heard it
Please do yourself good and buy the album.. I hope everyone is doing well and I am looking real forward to meeting you all someday.
If you ever get a chance write me back K... Thanks.. Hoping to hear from u.

I am a musician and I love music. The Rankins were the first Atlantic group that I truly became to love. The first song that ever graced my presence by the Rankins was Gillis Mountain and from then on they have been my favourite group. I have been lucky enough to have saw them 2 times live in where they were fantastic. I have all of their albums which are all great in their own right. I feel deeply saddened at the fact that the career of the group was short lived, but people change, things happen, and people move on. Whatever the outcome as individuals, may I just say this, God has blessed you with a wonderful talent, take that with you wherever you go and know that it and you have inspired, changed, and made an impression on the lives of many people. I know the feeling, I'm a performer also, singer/instumentalist.
