Jimmy Rankin "Morning Bound Train"

February 18, 2004 - CMT Canada's "Made in Canada" Feature

Fresh from his cross-Canada tour with Keith Urban and Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Jimmy Rankin has brought us a new video that strips everything down to the most important thing, the music.

“Morning Bound Train” features Jimmy and his band, Mark MacMillan on banjo, Ed Woodsworth on bass and Cheryl Smith on drums playing inside the airy interior of a warehouse-like space. According to Jimmy’s website at least one of the locations is Café Bella Muse in Halifax. The bulk of the clip has Jimmy and the band performing the song in a very acoustic-style set up, which connects with the approach of Jimmy’s sound overall. Animated moves on frozen “moments in time” punctuate throughout.

Released at the beginning of September, Jimmy Rankin’s ‘Handmade’ is “an album that bursts with the joy of making music that doesn’t need life support from a studio full of electronic gadgetry”, according to the CD notes on-line. Inspired by insomnia and written while on a trip to Mexico, “Morning Bound Train” is just one great example of its warm, organic approach. Jimmy Rankin is bound and determined to have you singing this catchy number in your sleep.

World Premiere of The Tar Ponds Loonie Give-Away
Featuring Heather Rankin

January 21, 2004
Press Release

What’s so funny about toxic waste? Plenty! Just watch the latest Cape Breton comedy, The Tar Ponds Loonie Give-Away. This political satire follows an unsuspecting couple who win the Sydney Tar Ponds in a government contest. They make their dreams come true by turning it into a golf and country club. The only problem is the golf course is built on Canada’s worst toxic waste site.

On Friday, February 13 at 930pm, this independent low-budget feature film, shot on Cape Breton Island, will have its world premiere at The World of Comedy International Film Festival. The screening will take place at the Town Hall Theatre, Innis College, 2 Sussex Ave, Toronto.

The Tar Ponds Loonie Give-Away is the second feature by director Romy Goulem, whose award-winning first feature The Drive has played to audiences across the country and around the world. In his new film Goulem breaks away from traditional filmmaking by using only an 11 page outline as a script; the entire picture was improvised. "I love working this way because of the honest and fresh material that you get. I was also the DOP and it was tough keeping the camera steady while shooting because I was laughing so much," says Goulem.

This is the first feature for lead actors and producers, K.C. Coombs and Kevin O’Keefe. Both born and raised on Cape Breton Island, Coombs is a Montreal based actor and O’Keefe is an award-winning producer at Vision TV in Toronto. "The film is a labour of love" says Coombs, who compares the process to giving birth "in both cases I’m thrilled with the results and glad it’s frigg’en finished." The film was financed by O’Keefe and Coombs and produced with the help of hundreds of volunteers. "I’m thrilled we’re screening on Friday the 13th. You’ll see the unluckiest couple in the world win the worst prize on the unluckiest day of the year," adds O’Keefe. "I hope the premiere of our film goes better than the opening of their golf course." As for what happens on opening day of the golf course, you’ll just have to watch The Tar Ponds Loonie Give-Away.

THE TAR PONDS LOONIE GIVE-AWAY

SYNOPSIS

The Tar Ponds Loonie Give-Away This political satire follows an unsuspecting couple who win the Sydney Tar Ponds in a government contest. They make their dreams come true by turning it into a golf and country club. The only problem is the golf course is built on Canada’s worst toxic waste site.

Lefty McKinnon believes his mini-putt is the oldest in North America, so he’s not crazy about his wife’s plans to change it. Carmie McKinnon thinks adding a golf course would be good for business. She also thinks it might bring back her father, a famous Cape Breton golfer, who ran off with his caddy when Carmie was a little girl.

But Carmie and Lefty aren’t the only Cape Bretoners who have plans for the Tar Ponds. Environmentalist, David Booker hopes it will bury his connections to the Love Canal, America’s environmental disaster. Local hair stylist, Mary-Ann Bell thinks it will make the perfect site for her European Spa. Carmie’s brother, Jigger, feels it will help revive his caddy career. Local reporter, Shirley MacDonald (Heather Rankin) hopes her coverage will get national exposure and boost her career. And finally Nova Scotia Premier, Will Power, just wants the whole mess to quietly go away.

The fight to win a toxic waste site may seem like a desperate act, but The Tar Ponds Loonie Give-Away isn’t about desperation. It’s about risk. The characters risk everything to make a better life for themselves. And in the end, Carmie and Lefty find a future for themselves even at Canada’s worst toxic waste site.

Music and Comedy - And Lots Of It!
The East Coast Music Awards on CBC-TV and Radio Sunday, Feb. 15 at 8pm (8:30pm NT)

January 21, 2004 - ECMA

CBC and the East Coast Music Association are loading up a major shipment of the region’s two major commodities—great music and hilarious comedy—for the 2004 EAST COAST MUSIC AWARDS, broadcast live from Mile One Stadium in St. John’s, Nfld., on CBC Television and CBC Radio Two, Sunday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. (8:30 p.m. NT).

The hosting duties will be shared by two of Newfoundland’s top funnymen, Shaun Majumder and Mark Critch, who have won critical acclaim on CBC Television’s award-winning This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

The Gemini Award-winning EAST COAST MUSIC AWARDS is one of the top events on Canada’s music calendar. This year’s show is shaping up to be one of the best ever, with a line-up of talent that includes the top acts from Atlantic Canada’s music scene: multi-award winners Great Big Sea; new pop sensation Shaye, whose tight, three-part harmonies are being heard on radio stations across the country; pop chanteuse Melanie Doane; and ECMA winning, and Juno-nominated band, Crush. The program will also showcase Cape Breton’s prized producer/songwriter Gordie Sampson, and singer/songwriter Jimmy Rankin, a six-time nominee this year.

The Entertainer of the Year Award will be determined through voting by members of the East Coast Music Association, as well as the public. Nominees are Crush, Blou, Jimmy Rankin, Melanie Doane and Damhnait Doyle. The public is invited to vote at: www.cbc.ca/ecma, by calling 1-900-870-ECMA (3262), or by mailing in a ballot in one of the Transcontinental newspapers in Atlantic Canada.   Each call costs 99 cents and a touch-tone phone is required. Deadline to vote is midnight, February 11, 2004.

Producers of the 2004 EAST COAST MUSIC AWARDS are Jac Gautreau for the East Coast Music Association, Michael Lewis for CBC-TV and Glen Tilley for CBC Radio Two. The executive in charge is Geoff D’Eon. The awards show will also be seen on CMT at a later date.
